About this experience

Explore 1866 Fort Phil Kearny exclusively from the Moon Hitch covered wagon as our guides bring the history beneath the soil to life!

Nestled at the foot of Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains, Fort Phil Kearny was once the largest and most heavily defended fort on the Bozeman Trail. Built from more than 4,000 logs and sprawling across 17 acres, the post stood at the center of a turbulent chapter in Western history.

Known to Native tribes as the “hated post on the Little Piney,” the fort became a focal point of Red Cloud’s War and witnessed some of the most significant conflicts of the Indian Wars, including the Fetterman Fight and Wagon Box Fight.

As our wagon rolls across the historic grounds, our guides will bring the people, struggles, and stories buried beneath this soil back to life. Discover how a fort built to protect travelers and miners became one of…
